Abstract
The most common understanding of machine is associated with an entity conceived for producing a desired artifact as many times as desired. Therefore, semiotic machine begs the understanding of such a production entity as applied to semiotic “artifacts:” signs, messages, significations. Another understanding is that of sign process (semiosis), i.e., if some sign entity is provided as input, the semiotic machine would generate interpretations according to a given context. We cannot escape the cultural understanding, or the more specific semiotic understanding, without ignoring interpretations based on how people conceive of and use machines, or become involved in particular sign processes. A historical perspective of how the notion of machine as such emerged has to be associated with the earliest forms of semiotic activity. However, the semiotic machine can, at the same time, challenge definitions grounded in culture and advance new understandings. Accordingly, a methodological perspective is not just an option, but also an epistemological necessity. Within the matrix that unites time and method, our current understanding of the semiotic machine should not preclude new understandings, as these become increasingly possible. We are not trying to guess the future, based on knowledge accumulated so far, but rather to indicate that this knowledge might guide new understandings. To write about the semiotic machine is to write about semiotics as it relates to the human being involved in expression, communication, and signification.
